The Sweet Pea 'Mammoth Mix' is a vigorous, climbing variety renowned for its extra-large, fragrant blooms and rapid growth. It produces a dazzling array of flowers in bold shades of pink, red, purple, blue, and white. Growing to a height of 180-250 cm, this variety is perfect for adding vertical interest to gardens — ideal for trellises, fences, arches, and obelisks.

'Mammoth Mix' is loved not only for its vibrant, oversized blossoms but also for its delightful scent, which attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The long stems make it an excellent choice for cut flower arrangements.

Light

Thrives in full sun — at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Can tolerate partial shade, though fewer blooms may appear.

Soil

Prefers rich, well-drained soil.

Prepare soil by mixing in organic compost or well-rotted manure before planting.

Optimal soil pH is 6.5-7.5.

Water

Water regularly, keeping soil moist but not soggy — about 2.5 cm of water per week.

Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to mildew.

Temperature

Best grown in cool to moderate temperatures — ideal range is 13-18°C.

Sow seeds outdoors in early spring once the danger of frost has passed.

Fertilizer

Feed every 2-3 weeks with a high-potash fertilizer (like tomato feed) to encourage blooms.

Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they promote leafy growth at the expense of flowers.

Sowing and Propagation

Direct sow seeds in early spring or autumn in mild climates.

Or start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost for an earlier bloom.

Soak seeds overnight to soften their outer coat and speed up germination.

Plant seeds 2.5 cm deep and 10 cm apart.

Germination takes 10-14 days.

Spacing

Space plants 20-30 cm apart to allow airflow and prevent mildew.

Support

Provide sturdy trellises, canes, or netting for the climbing vines to grip.

Secure young plants gently to their supports as they grow.

Maintenance

Deadhead regularly by removing spent blooms to prolong flowering.

Pinch out the tips when plants are about 15 cm tall to encourage bushier growth and more flowers.

Mulch around the base to retain moisture and keep roots cool.
