Sugar Ann Peas (Pisum sativum) is a popular, early-maturing variety of snap peas — meaning you can eat the entire pod when the peas inside are still small and sweet. These peas are known for their compact, dwarf vines that grow about 60 cm tall, making them perfect for small gardens, containers, or raised beds. They produce crisp, stringless pods with a deliciously sweet flavour.
Planting Time
Sow in early spring as soon as the soil is workable — about 4–6 weeks before the last frost.
For a fall crop, plant again in late summer.
Peas prefer cool weather and can handle light frosts.
Location & Soil
Choose a sunny to partially shaded spot with well-drained, fertile soil.
Optimal soil pH: 6.0–7.0.
Add compost or aged manure to enrich the soil.
Sowing
Direct sow seeds 2–3 cm deep and 5 cm apart.
Space rows about 45 cm apart.
No need to soak seeds, but it can speed up germination.
Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged.
Water deeply once or twice a week depending on rainfall.
Support
Although they are a dwarf variety, a low trellis or pea fence can help keep the plants upright and the pods clean.
Providing support also increases airflow, reducing disease risk.
Care
Mulch around plants to retain moisture and prevent weeds.
Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as peas naturally fix nitrogen in the soil.
Harvest
Ready to harvest in just 50–60 days — one of the earliest snap pea varieties!
Pick pods when they are plump but still young — about 6–8 cm long.
Harvest regularly to encourage more pod production.
Companion Planting
Good companions: carrots, radishes, lettuce.
Avoid planting near onions and garlic — they can stunt pea growth.
