Dahlia 'Unwins Bedding Mix' is a stunning, compact variety bred for vibrant, long-lasting colour in garden beds, borders, and containers. This mix produces single and semi-double flowers in a variety of bright shades, including red, pink, yellow, orange, and white. The plants typically grow to a height of 30–50 cm, making them ideal for mass planting or container displays. Their attractive blooms appear from early summer until the first frost, providing continuous colour. This variety is particularly popular with pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Detailed Growing Guide

Soil Requirements

Prefers well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter.

Ideal soil pH: 6.0–7.0 (neutral to slightly acidic).

Heavy clay soils should be improved with compost or well-rotted manure to enhance drainage.

Sunlight & Location

Requires full sun (at least 6–8 hours per day).

Best grown in sheltered areas protected from strong winds, as the stems can be delicate.

Sowing & Planting

Starting from Seeds (Indoors)

Timing: Start seeds 6–8 weeks before the last frost in trays or pots.

Depth: Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep in seed compost.

Temperature: Keep at 18–22°C for optimal germination.

Transplanting: Once seedlings are 10–15 cm tall and the risk of frost has passed, harden them off and plant outdoors.

Direct Sowing (Outdoors)

When: After all risk of frost has passed (late spring).

Spacing: Sow seeds 25–30 cm apart to allow good air circulation.

Depth: Plant seeds 0.5 cm deep and cover lightly with soil.

Watering: Keep soil moist until germination occurs (7–14 days).

Watering

Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging.

During hot weather, water early morning or late evening to prevent rapid evaporation.

Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.

Fertilization

Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer (10-10-10) every 2–3 weeks during the growing season.

Once plants begin flowering, switch to a high-potassium feed (such as tomato fertilizer) to encourage continuous blooming.

Mulching & Weeding

Apply a 2–3 cm layer of mulch (compost, straw, or bark) around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Regularly remove weeds to reduce competition for nutrients.

Deadheading & Pruning

Remove spent flowers (deadheading) to promote continuous blooming throughout the season.

Pinch back young plants when they reach 15 cm tall to encourage bushier growth and more blooms.

Pest & Disease Management

Common Pests: Aphids, slugs, and spider mites. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil if infestations occur.

Diseases: Susceptible to powdery mildew and botrytis if air circulation is poor. Avoid overhead watering and space plants properly.

Overwintering & Storage

In mild climates, dahlias can be left in the ground but apply a thick layer of mulch for winter protection.

In colder regions, lift and store tubers at the end of the season:

After the first frost, cut stems back to 10 cm above the soil.

Carefully dig up tubers, shake off excess soil, and dry them for a few days.

Store tubers in a cool, dry place (4–7°C) in slightly damp peat or sawdust.

Replant in spring once the danger of frost has passed.
