Cosmos (Cosmos spp.) are vibrant, easy-to-grow annual flowers known for their daisy-like blooms and feathery foliage. They come in a variety of colours — including pink, white, purple, red, orange, and yellow — and can grow anywhere from 60 cm to 1.5 m tall, depending on the variety. Cosmos are perfect for adding a wild, romantic feel to gardens and are beloved by bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Planting Time
Sow seeds after the last frost when the soil has warmed, or start indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost.
In warmer climates, you can sow seeds again in late summer for a fall bloom.
Location & Soil
Full sun is best — at least 6–8 hours daily.
Thrives in poor to average, well-drained soil.
Avoid overly rich soil, as it can cause excessive foliage growth with fewer flowers.
Sowing
Direct sow seeds 1 cm deep and 30 cm apart.
If transplanting, space seedlings 30–45 cm apart.
Germination usually takes 7–10 days.
Watering
lightly until established, then reduce watering — cosmos are drought-tolerant.
Allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
Support
Taller varieties (over 1 m) may need staking or cage supports to prevent them from flopping over.
Care
Deadhead spent blooms regularly to encourage continuous flowering.
For bushier plants, pinch off the tips when they're about 30 cm tall.
Fertilizer isn’t necessary — too much nitrogen leads to fewer flowers.
Bloom Time
Cosmos bloom from early summer until the first frost.
They often self-seed, so you may get surprise blooms the following year!
Companion Planting
Great companions: zinnias, marigolds, sunflowers, and herbs like dill or lavender.
Cosmos attracts pollinators and beneficial insects, helping neighbouring plants thrive.
Harvesting for Bouquets
Cut stems in the morning when blooms are just opening.
Remove lower leaves and place stems in water immediately — they last 5–7 days in a vase.
