Long Island Brussels sprouts are a variety of Brussels sprouts known for their excellent taste and reliable growth. These sprouts are small, green, and tightly packed, with a mildly bitter flavour that becomes sweeter after frost. Here's a guide to growing them. Long Island Brussels sprouts produce medium to large, compact heads that grow along a tall, sturdy stalk. Each head is typically 3-4 cm in diameter. They have a mild, nutty taste that becomes sweeter after exposure to frost. The sprouts are crunchy and dense, ideal for roasting, steaming, or sautéing.

The plants can grow up to 75-90 cm tall.

Growing Long Island Brussels Sprouts

Location

Choose a sunny spot with well-draining, fertile soil.

Brussels sprouts thrive in cooler temperatures, so ensure they’re planted in an area that doesn't get too hot during the summer.

Soil

Prefer soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5.

Amend soil with compost or well-rotted manure for better fertility.

Make sure the soil drains well to prevent root rot.

Planting

Start seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before your last expected frost date, around early to mid-spring.

Transplant seedlings outdoors once they have at least 4-6 leaves and the danger of frost has passed.

Space plants about 45 cm apart in rows that are 75 cm apart. They can be placed closer if you plan on pruning the plants.

Watering

Brussels sprouts require consistent moisture, so water deeply and regularly, especially during dry spells.

Avoid wetting the foliage to prevent diseases like powdery mildew.

Fertilization

Use a balanced fertilizer or organic compost to promote healthy growth.

Fertilize lightly every 4-6 weeks during the growing season.

Care

Keep the plants well-weeded to reduce competition for nutrients and water.

As the plants grow, they may need staking to prevent them from falling over, especially as the heads develop.

Remove lower leaves to encourage better airflow and reduce disease risk.

Harvesting

Brussels sprouts grow from the bottom of the stalk upwards. Begin harvesting when the sprouts are firm and about 2.5-4 cm in diameter.

Harvest by twisting the sprouts off the stem. If the weather turns cold, the flavour will improve.

Pests & Diseases

Keep an eye out for aphids, cabbage worms, and slugs.

To control pests, you can use row covers, natural predators like ladybugs, or organic insecticides.

With proper care, Long Island Brussels sprouts can provide a bountiful harvest. Enjoy them fresh or store them in a cool, dry place to enjoy throughout the winter!
